Scout’s Hockey Game

Scout, my youngest granddaughter, is a sophomore this year. She has been playing hockey since she was 10 or 11. Although one of the smallest girls on the team, she plays defense. She is a speed demon and a force to be reckoned with in any match. She’ll go to the boards with the biggest of them.

Their season hasn’t started yet, but the Red Wing team had a four-on-four match in Dodge County. Several things you need to know….

Last year Red Wing had one of the top high school players in the country. She was, and is, on the US Olympic team. Scout played shoulder to shoulder with her. Even though she was only a freshman, Scout made the Varsity team last year. This year she is the team captain, and will be helping rebuild the team which lost a bunch of seniors. Today’s game was played mostly with 8th and 9th graders against the varsity of the Dodge County team.

Dodge County has an ice rink that draws from several cities around it, so they have some excellent talent. Even though they were considerably bigger and more experienced than Red Wing, our girls held their own. The final score was 7 to 9, a great accomplishment considering Red Wing’s goalie was a third string 8th grader.

And I want you to know I lasted through the whole game in the coldest ice rink in Minnesota. Sure, I looked like Nanook of the North with my t-shirt, heavy long sleeve t-shirt, borrowed winter hoodie, all covered by a heavy fleece vest and a wool blanket, BUT I STUCK IT OUT!!

Of course, it didn’t help the image when HIll was sitting next to me in shorts and crocks with no socks, and the guy on my left was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

Let’s focus on the important things though...Scout scored a goal!! That’s a great accomplishment for a defense player.

You can’t tell I’m proud of her can you?

Spiritual Reflection:

Our Daily Bread today was about how families have shared their faith through generations. I through about Miss Ludie, mother’s mother. Some of my earliest memories are of being with her in the First Baptist Church of Bronte. I was so little all I could see was the Broadman Hymnal in the rack in front of me. I loved listening to the music flowing over the top of the pew. It just occurred to me, after sharing this memory many times, that for me to see the hymnal while they were singing meant she had committed the hymns to heart and memory.

When she died, her old worn KJV was by her side with all her underlinings. A bookmark was at “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” It has always been a favorite passage of mine, and as I read it that day I knew why.

Organized religion has not been kind to Hill’s family. When they were younger, the kids attended a church in Dallas where they all were very active. Scout has not had that opportunity, so I worry about her faith.

I’m pondering how to best pass my faith on to them without being my uncle, who turned everybody off by his ‘in-your-face’ approach, coupled with a life-style that didn’t really match his profession.
