Rothenburg, Germany

Picking up where I left off....

On the way to Passau we stopped at Rothenburg for lunch. It is one of the three cities in Germany where the outer walls are completely intact. We strolled down the cobblestone streets into what is a picturesque cliche of the essential German tourist town...shops of every kind with of souvenir you can imagine. There are multiple stores dedicated to selling only Christmas things. Talk about bling!

The most famous part of the city though is the tower where Miestertrink,, the salvation of the city is remembered. According to the story, the city was captured and the invading army’s commander said if the mayor could drink a liter of beer in one quaff he would spare the city. The mayor did and the city was spared. Now, every hour on the hour, the scene is re-enacted.

After an excellent meal of jagerschnitzel, we headed off again for Passau. Shortly afterward we stopped for diesel fuel and a potty break.

Lesson two: If you’re on a German autobahn always have coins!

While Frank refueled I went into the restroom. An attendant was taking coins out of a machine right next to a set of turnstiles. A sign proclaimed .70 Euros. Pay toilets?? You’ve got to be kidding me! All I had was a 5 Euro bill and they didn’t make change! The attendant had pity on me though and let me through with a stern warning to have the correct change next time!.

REFLECTION: Haven’t got a clue on this one. Plan ahead maybe? Be nice to toilet attendants?
