Hamburg, Frankfurt & Home

Leaving out of Hamburg we took the back roads again. And, as usual, I really enjoyed it.

Down the road we saw signs for the Duetsches Panzermuseum in Munster, so we made a detour to visit. The Museum is dedicated to the history of tank warfare and had models ranging from the first “tank” to the latest tanks, with representations of German, Russian and US models.

The museum would have been interesting on its own, but what made it even more interesting was Frank’s knowledge of each tank, its history, its capabilities and its vulnerabilities.

After visiting we stopped for a drink in their little shop/cafe. Among the treats they had besides coffee, hot chocolate and soft drinks was...a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream cooler! Shades of the old comedy routine, “They’re everywhere. They’re everywhere.” Talk about a global economy!

The rest of the trip to Frankfurt was uneventful. There was snow on the countryside, but we timed it right miss having to drive in it.

Checking the car in at the Airport, we walked to the Hilton Hotel in the building the locals call ‘the Whale’ (because of it’s size and shape) which is parallel to the terminal building. Didn’t measure, but it’s probably a good two miles or more.

After settling in our rooms we ate at the hotel restaurant, which, one more time...was excellent.

The next day Frank left early for the N Scale convention, a two hour train ride away, and I just rested and did some blogging. Mid-afternoon I found out Frank was back at the hotel after a fruitless and frustrating morning. Without any warning the opening of the Convention had been delayed so he had a long walk plus four hours train travel for nothing.

To celebrate our last night in Germany we went to the Paulaner’s Restaurant in the Whale. Frank had his last cordon bleu and I, well of course...had wienerschnitzel, both of which……

The good thing about the HIlton is there is a bag check station just around the corner from the Hotel entrance where we were able to do an early check-in for ourselves and our luggage. The next morning, the transportation lady met us there to take me to the boarding gate.

Mickey had arranged for me to have transportation through the terminals so I wouldn’t have to walk. On each leg of the flight, the transportation people were fantastic, cheerfully pushing me the miles I would have otherwise had to walk and shepherding me through customs and baggage claim before finally sending me on my way. They were a real blessing!
